The Bible says Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy. The apostle Paul urged the church at Corinth not to be ignorant of Satan’s schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11) because when we are aware of the tactics of the Enemy, we will be better equipped to stand against his devices.
Your marriage is at ground zero of a real spiritual battle. Ephesians tells us that marriage is symbolic of Christ and the Church, The Bride of Christ. Yeshua is coming back for His Bride without Spot or Wrinkle or any such thing, a Gloria's Bride. Satan attacked the first marriage (Gen 3:1-5), and he is still attacking marriages today. The Bible refers to him as "your adversary, the devil" (1 Peter 5:8). His scheme is the same now as it was then: "divide and conquer."
He wants to divide you and isolate you from one another. He uses past hurt and our weakness to do this. He is a master of deceit who will make every attempt to deceive you in your thinking about your spouse and your marriage. He is an accuser who will try to get you locked into thinking how wrong and selfish your spouse is and how pridefully right you are.
Unwary husbands and wives are most easily ensnared in the devil's traps. Every opportunity where the enemy is not blocked, he will attempt to infiltrate your mind, and hence your marriage by trying to lure you down such paths as anger, criticism, unforgiveness, strife, defensiveness, lust, condemnation, fear, doubt, unbelief, and discouragement. He will tempt you with thoughts, desires, and urges to think, act or speak in ways that are divisive and hurtful to your mate and your marriage.
Fortunately, we possess potent weapons against Satan and his schemes. 2 Corinthians 10:4 informs us, "We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy's strong places."
One of the powerful spiritual weapons we possess is God's truth.
To protect our marriages, we must arm ourselves for battle by diligently reading, studying, and meditating on the Word of God and applying it in our everyday lives.
Ephesians 5:25-27, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish."
